How do you get video to play on a Garmin Nuvi?

Billy asked:

OK I do know a bit about computers… I know the Garmin’s dont come with this installed. I have a U.S. version Nuvi 370, I am sure it can run video, as well as play the mp3s that is does and pictures. Can you please post links to how this is done. Also I did buy the unlimited map upgrades for America and Europe and the lifetime traffic, so I dont want to mess those up either.

What makes you “sure it can run video”?
AFAIK – they can’t. If they did – Garmin would be using it as marketing.
You are possibly confusing a computer with a piece of dedicated hardware. GPS units are dedicated hardware. Unlike a computer – dedicated hardware has to have software written specifically for its combination of processor and hardware. It generally doesn’t have an operating system that is designed to run generic programs. The only people that would have access to the information needed to write such a facility would be Garmin themselves, or a very dedicated embedded hardware programmer/hacker. It’s not just a case of minor tweaks – it’s writing a whole program, and embedding it into the firmware.
