Remember the during the time of Ferdinand Magellan, Spain and Portugal were competing during the expansionism age.
Now, the dilemma was that the route to the Spice Islands was being controlled by pirates, if I am not mistaken, and the people then believed that there is no other way to get through (believing that the Earth was flat).
Magellan proposed a circumnavigation — that is, by passing through the opposite direction, they could still get to the Moluccas. He is believed to have said (although it is debatable), “The church says the earth is flat, but I know that it is round, for I have seen the shadow on the moon, and I have more faith in a shadow than in the church.”
However, Portugal (Magellan was Portuguese) mocked his idea and so he sought support from Spain.
Spain supported his expedition and so they journeyed until he was killed by Lapu-Lapu’s men in the Philippines. [*Just for fun, you can check this video out. It's entitled "Magellan" and was written by Yoyoy Villame, a Filipino:]
